Can't really believe this but I was actually quite hyped up over the whole idea that our NAtion might infact be able to clinch a much coveted medal in the on-going Beijing Olympics. Of cause, all due credit would have to be given to Tao Li for giving the small island along the Straits of Malacca a little adrenaline rush. It was alittle disappointing to know that she came in 5th in her 100m butterfly race. There and again, how many of us actually have the ability to compete in a world competition like the Olympics ya? Whatever it is, being in the finals itself has certainly done the Nation proud by elevating us on a much playing field in the future Olympics to come.
There seems be this impression that Singapore tend to "buy" our national glory and pride form overseas, since most of our star players are imported from other countries. I won't deny from this as I actually did felt this way on several occasions. On many occasions, we may even grimace when we see throngs of foreign workers near Jurong point or Little India, and make jokes about them. Don't you agree? Maybe it's just me...
Anyway, working at Keppel has kind of changed my perspective towards these FT(foreign talents) & FW(foreign workers). I realised they are pretty much the ones that fill the empty gaps in our little dot in the World map. From working in jobs that SIngaporeans shun away from and battling in global sporting arenas, these FT & FT have clearly made SIngapore more holistic as a country itself... or at least this is what I think.
I hope I'm not sounding like a FT welfare advocate but rather one that has a better perpective of these new-found friends of mine. So perhaps next time, before passing any caustic remarks on these FTWs, take a min to think of what they have contributed in our Nation building and judge for yourself if they warrant such returns from us.
Cheers!
Oh! I'm writing this entry as I'm waiting for my lesson to start at 6. Er... I shdn't be doing this right!? Shit...
